Pilgrimage to Farnese Duchy & Emilia region
From the time I first posted my sabbatical itinerary, people asked about this region of Italy and I had to plead ignorance; I knew nothing about it. Seems that this region was a major middle-ages thoroughfare through which people would pass as they made their pilgrimages to Rome. It is loaded with churches and places of antiquity, but are (today) overshadowed by the other major Italian cities. After all, if you had a choice of visiting Rome or Assisi, or the Emilia region, and only had a limited number of days, which would you choose. And that’s why few have heard of this locale. But we’re here for 11 weeks of sabbatical, and have time to explore the ancient pilgrimage paths that Christians walked on their way to Rome. (I’m just grateful we have a fast-train and tour bus to traverse the way today).
